Rose Healing

An introductory look into the power of rose essence.

Autumn in New Zealand, my first taste of Winter in just about two years. One evening in April I was settling into my night with a bubble bath. I had recently treated myself and bought a rose bubble bar. I carefully broke a glittery section of it off and gently submerged it in the steaming water flowing from the tap. I watched the frothy, pink water create growing pools of bubbles that glinted in the flickers of the few candles I had lit around the tub. I breathed in deeply as the soft scent of roses started to fill the room.

I have never really considered myself a fan of rose. I always thought it was the scent of grandmothers or an overused metaphor for life. A bouquet of roses accompanied by some sort of teddy bear or heart shaped box of chocolates (so Hollywood and so not my cup of tea).

But this time was different.

I sat in the bath listening to one of my favourite podcasts talk about the benefits of womb healing and felt an energy so peaceful and happy wash over me. A rare energy that made me feel completely content, grounded yet up in the air. I felt my body sink into my senses and life slowed down with such beauty and love. My mind stopped racing and the world felt steady. This little moment of self-care left me feeling so full of love, so beautifully quiet and peaceful.

After that night I could not stop craving rose. I constantly wanted to be around the flower, dressed head to toe in shades of pink, I found a rose perfume that was stashed in my travel case, I became fascinated with why my nose kept telling me I needed rose. Overtime I thought that maybe my grandmother was onto something! So, I trusted my nose and did some digging into the power of rose.

Rebecca Altman describes in an article, “rose unwinds the stuckness that is often rooted in old grief, old trauma. These are the things that get locked in our body when they happen because we don’t know how to process them, or are unable to process them. Feeling pain is rotten, why wouldn’t we block it off to hold it at bay? Every time these patterns are triggered however, we live them out again and again. I’ve seen rose help with this so many times, to slowly and gently start to ease the tension holding these traumas in place.”

In a world where we are becoming increasingly disconnected from ourselves, fighting for connection by finding ways to tap into and heal the stalagmites of emotion within us is so important for the overall health of ourselves and society. Once we allow each tendon of pain to be acknowledged, rose can soften the blows of grief and work to lift the mind out of negative spirals.

Rose has long been known as the ‘queen of essential oils’ for the multitude of therapeutic properties it holds, especially in relation to feminine energy and regulating women’s reproductive health. When used in a massage oil on the breasts it can tighten the skin, be a preventative measure for breast cancer, improve breast pain, help breakdown cysts, and more. Just breathing it in has profound psychological effects that helped to elevate mood and ground you into your sensuality. Its scent has been used for generations to re-establish and strengthen connection with the inner voice, dispel feelings of anxiety and depression, and help align with our soft, feminine energy.

Essential oils also relate to personalities. When you embody rose personality, you flow like water. You can cleanse your negativity with love and patience, bringing your strength into your light. The darkness we each hold is not forgotten or pushed aside. It is given space to breathe with compassion and hope for healing. Rose is not about brute force or being a perfect picture. She is about finding power in her quiet, vulnerable, gentle moments, and allowing the energy of life to spill into every corner of her body.

June marks the Rose Full Moon in the lunar calendar. Transiting through the astrological sign of Sagittarius it could not be a better marriage. Sagittarius asks us to expand our minds and emotions and to learn from the past. Rose asks us to heal from the hardships we have faced and understand the world through love. The two together are asking “What is the best that can happen? The optimistic archer, ruled by fire, encourages us to always assume the best will unfold. This rose-tinted way of viewing the world doesn’t mean we are blind to hardships and traumas. It just helps us to find meaning in everything, even our hardest days.” Spirit Daughter

There is so much to uncover about the power of this flower which I will be exploring more in-depth in later posts. I think with everything that is going on in the world and the collective feelings of grief, loss, rage, loneliness perhaps a dose of rose might ease a moment of this pain; even if its going to the local supermarket and picking up a bunch to have on your bedside table.

Have you heard the story of the rose,

That blooms in the night?

Without the sun’s presence,

She grew from her own light.

She did not yearn for

His warmth on her petals,

For she knew she held the power,

To radiate light from within.

Though she had strong thorns,

Her heart was always open,

For those with an open heart,

Can never be broken.
